Our History
On 18 July 1887 the Geraldton Provisional State School was opened on a site which is now known as Memorial Park, Innisfail. The first Head teacher was Thomas Edward White and the enrolment was 15boys and 13 girls.
On 1 August 1894 the Geraldton Provisional School became the Geraldton State School. The Head Teacher at that time was Michael Nolan and the enrolment had increased to 39 boys and 27 girls. Theschool was transferred to its present site in Emily Street.
During 1913 the name of the school was changed to the Innisfail State School (No. 527); this was because the town itself had been renamed Innisfail. The Principal at this time was H.G.Ladbrook and the enrolment had now risen to 70 boys and 59 girls.

School Context
Innisfail State School is a band 8 school in a rural township some 100 km south of Cairns. Innisfail is part of the Tablelands/Johnstone District and is one of three major state schools in the township.
The demographic mix
Our clientele is complex with 25 % being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander background and 25% having English as a Second language. Students’ families range in the low to upper-middle wage-earning bracket.
The diversity of Resources that students bring to learning:
We recognise the rich heritages of our clientele. We acknowledge the richness of their cultures and celebrate them annually in our Multi-cultural Week. We promote cultural awareness and acceptance as essential to our approach to developing the Affective domain.
Enrolment, mobility and attendance rate:
While student numbers are maintained in the 300- 360 range over the past three years there is high transience in the population. Attendance is regular from the majority of students and family circumstance is the main reason for unauthorized absenteeism.

School Facility
Classrooms are double teaching areas where cooperative teaching is encouraged. There are 7 double areas and all are air-conditioned.
We have an established Student Support Service which houses the Cane Cutter Cluster Special Education Unit. It is also the base for the LOTE teacher, the ESL teacher, Guidance Officer and Learning Support teacher.
Innisfail State School is fortunate to back onto Calendar Park, thus giving students ample area for play and sports practice. The school shares lease arrangements with the Johnstone Shire Council and allows the grounds to be used by nearby schools.
